Euro 2028 will be held across England, but Old Trafford is not the host stadium even though Man Utd has one of the largest stadiums in the country.

Old Trafford has been dropped from the list of stadiums to host the 2028 European Championship after Manchester United withdrew from the process earlier this year due to uncertainty over redevelopment plans.

UEFA today confirmed that Euro 2028 will be held in the UK and Republic of Ireland and that Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium will host matches in the city, but United cannot guarantee that Old Trafford will ready to operate time.

The stadium has been shortlisted by the Football Association in its preliminary application to UEFA, but United have announced plans to review the future of Old Trafford with ongoing redevelopment plans Consideration. When the preliminary bid was announced in November 2022, United assumed the stadium would be ready to host Euro 2028 matches.

But following discussions between United and the FA, it was agreed that the stadium would be dropped from the list of potential host venues as it could not be guaranteed that the stadium would be used in 2028. Redevelopment plans are yet to progress with plans being delayed until the Glazers’ strategic review is complete, with the 10-month process yet to result in a takeover or investment new investment in the club.

Confirming they had left Old Trafford off their list of potential venues earlier this year, a United statement said: “Manchester United are delighted to present Old Trafford as a potential venue for the matches at UEFA Euro 2028 and is proud of its strong arguments.

“However, in subsequent discussions with the FA, it became clear that we could not give the necessary certainty about the possibility Old Trafford’s readiness due to the possibility of stadium redevelopment. As a result, we had relationships that agreed to remove us from the shortlist of potential hosts.

“We are committed to maintaining Old Trafford’s status as England’s largest and most iconic club football ground, and look forward to future opportunities to host international matches and major events at the Theater of Dreams.”
