A Man Utd treble winner reckons Erik ten Hag has got his goalkeeping situation all wrong, with the United boss explaining why Andre Onana is at risk of being exposed.

Onana replaced David de Gea as first-choice goalkeeper for Man Utd. The 27-year-old has signed a £47.2million deal at Inter Milan after a sensational season at the San Siro.

Ten Hag knows exactly what Onana will achieve given their time together at Ajax from 2017-22.

The 27-year-old Cameroonian star is much more comfortable with the ball than De Gea. Additionally, his willingness to take high starting positions allows him to push the defensive line further without creating too much of a gap between defense and goalie.

Dwight Yorke says many Manchester United fans are happy to have Onana in place of De Gea, but they could be in for a disrespectful awakening.

The striker, who played a key role in United’s treble-winning campaign in 1999, believes Onana could also make a difference in the Premier League as his league is stronger. I’m here.

According to Yorke, the faster pace of play and more pressing compared to Serie A can lead to many embarrassing moments for Onana.

York also criticized Man United’s disrespectful sacking of De Gea.

A reporter from The Athletic reports that Manchester United have offered De Gea a contract extension at a steep discount. De Gea signed the document despite United canceling his contract and instead offering a different contract with more favorable terms.

It was the last straw for De Gea, who refused to sign an amended contract and became a free agent afterwards.

Onana trying to be something he’s not – Yorke

“I’ve said before that Man Utd need to be careful what they wish for with losing David de Gea,” said Yorke (via the Manchester Evening News).

“For all the good De Gea has done for Man Utd, the way his career ended was really bad.

“I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt United now they’ve bought Andre Onana. Be careful what you wish for. De Gea is the Golden Glove winner, a high-profile player who has made mistakes, like the rest of us.

“In my opinion, Onana is not as good as De Gea and people need to watch him very carefully. I’ve seen Onana before, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish with how fast the game is and how often you are pressured.

“Onana tries to be an outfield player rather than a goalkeeper sometimes. I will be watching this guy very closely, and the people who have criticised De Gea and wanted him to leave will probably be the ones who will be calling him to come back.

“I’m hoping that doesn’t happen for Man Utd’s sake.”

Onana made his Man Utd debut during the 2-0 friendly defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Onana was chipped by Jude Bellingham within six minutes and was later beaten by an acrobatic bicycle kick from Joselu.

However, there was little he could do with either goal given the quality of the finishes. What’s more, he wasted no time in displaying the other traits he possesses, completing 39 of 41 passes and mopping up a dangerous long ball over the top thanks to his high starting position.

Whether Yorke’s concerns play out or are misplaced, only time will tell.
