Manchester City have completed their first major signing of the summer.

Brazilian winger Savinho has arrived for an initial £21m after starring for Girona in La Liga and will be straight into Pep Guardiola’s plans for the year to compete with the rest of the squad. The 20-year-old has said he is happy playing on either wing as well as through the middle, so has plenty of options to get into the starting XI.

City signing an out-an-out winger has to be good news for Foden’s intentions of moving into the middle. Coming in from the wings certainly worked at times last season, but the desire has always been to see him running things from a central position.

Savinho has described himself as an energetic winger who thrives in one-on-ones. Sounds a bit like Doku, really. Just how much of that will actually shine through once Guardiola has had time with him? Well, that’s another question.

Unless someone leaves this summer – and Julian Alvarez has been the only player discussed so far, and even then it’s not looking likely – then this will do some damage to Oscar Bobb’s chances of regular game time.

Grealish is certainly going to have more competition but that may well push him on to find the levels of 2022/23 again. One thing for sure is that City aren’t going to be short of options.
