NASA is set to release the results of a highly anticipated study of unexplained flying objects in Earth’s skies on Thursday.

The US space agency announced last year that it was reviewing evidence of unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, which have replaced the term “UFO” in official language.

This topic has long fascinated the public but has been shunned by mainstream science.

An independent group of 16 researchers shared their preliminary observations in May, finding that the available data and eyewitness reports were insufficient to draw firm conclusions, while calls for more systematic collection of high-quality data.

Thursday’s report is unlikely to change that outcome, but it likely marks the beginning of a new mission for the agency.

As NASA’s probes and rovers scour the solar system for fossils of ancient microbes and its astronomers search for signs of intelligent civilizations on distant planets distant, its historic posture is to “shed light” on observations of our home planet. , More than 800 “events” were collected over 27 years, of which 2-5% were considered potentially unusual, the report’s authors said at the May meeting.

These are defined as “anything that’s not easily understood by the operator or sensor” or “something that does something strange,” said team member Nadia Drake.

The U.S. government began taking the UAP issue more seriously in recent years, partly because of concerns that they were linked to foreign surveillance.

NASA’s work, based on unclassified documents, is separate from the Pentagon’s investigation, although the two coordinate how they apply scientific tools and methods.

In July, a former US intelligence officer made headlines when he told a congressional committee that he “absolutely” believed the government was in possession of unidentified paranormal phenomena – also like the remains of their extraterrestrial operators. David Grusch told lawmakers.

Earlier this week, the bodies believed to be those of two “non-human” creatures were presented at a congressional hearing in Mexico, generating much surprise, skepticism and ridicule on social media.

The allegedly mummified remains, which were gray in color and had a human-like body shape, were brought by Jaime Maussan, a controversial Mexican journalist and researcher who said he found them in Peru in 2017.
