HITC understands that Manchester United are progressing with talks over a new deal for midfield starlet Kobbie Mainoo.

The 18-year-old has emerged as a key performer for United this season and is now seen an important member of Erik Ten Hag’s starting XI.

The midfielder signed his last contract in early 2023 and it had clauses that meant his terms were improving with certain targets hit.

Indeed, United have Mainoo tied down until 2027 with an option – so there are no worries about his long-term future, but such has been his progress the club are looking at a new deal.

Reward

HITC revealed in February that the club’s new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had green-lit talks to begin, whilst the club put together their new footballing department with the likes of Omar Berrada and Dan Ashworth set to be in charge from next season.

But United are firm believers in rewarding their young talent as they progress and Mainoo is in-line for a bumper deal.

The Stockport-born midfielder has started 13 Premier League so far this season and his form has brought him to the attention of England boss Gareth Southgate.

Ghana have expressed an interest in landing Mainoo – but HITC has been told that he is focused on England and he is contention for the Three Lions ahead of this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

Southgate appreciation

Southgate, at the recent Nations League draw, confirmed his admiration for Mainoo and admitted he was looking at the type of player he is.

“He’s doing brilliantly, I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such,” said Southgate.

“He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”
