Former Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s wife has died, his family announced in a statement.

Lady Cathy Ferguson, wife of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has died at the age of 84, her family has announced. The Ferguson family confirmed Mrs. Cathy’s death in a statement Friday afternoon.

Lady Cathy and Sir Alex met in 1964 when the United manager was her 23-year-old and married two years later. They were married for 57 years. They had three sons, Mark in 1968 and twins Jason and Darren in 1972.

The Ferguson family said in a statement: three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family has requested privacy at this time.

Dame Cathy supported Sir Alex when he suffered a brain haemorrhage that threatened her life in May 2018.

Manchester United said in a statement: “Everyone at Manchester United is deeply saddened by the death of Sir Alex Ferguson and his family.”

Sir Alex previously spoke about Lady Cathy and praised her influence on her children and grandchildren. he said: “Kathy is amazing with her kids. It’s a military operation with her. If any of them misbehave, they will end up in the doghouse.

It was Lady Cathy who helped Sir Alex dissuade her from her original plans to retire in 2002. He revealed in her autobiography that she told him: Secondly, you are not at home. And thirdly, you’re too young anyway.

“I definitely would have carried on,” he said. “I saw [my wife] was watching television one night, and she looked up at the ceiling. I knew she was isolated. Her and Bridget were twins, you know?”

Having talked him out of retirement once, Sir Alex said there was no attempt to do so when he did call time on his career in 2013.

“When I told her this time I was going to retire she had no objection whatsoever. I knew she wanted me to do it,” he said.
