Manchester United just won two trophies with help from Phil Jones – this is how they did it - timelineoffuture

Man Utd’s U18s have enjoyed a terrific season, winning two trophies, and the club’s superb academy continues to blossom.

The crest you see embroidered onto Manchester United’s suit jackets has a Latin inscription.

The words ‘Concilio et Labore’, which translates roughly as ‘Wisdom and Effort’, are along the bottom. The three diagonal stripes signify the rivers that flow through the city – the Irwell, the Irk and the Medlock – and there’s an antelope wearing a gold chain and a golden lion with a crown.

There’s a sophisticated elegance about the Mancunian crest that makes it perfect for United and it’s still used on club suits today, complemented with a red tie and black shoes.

“It’s a massive thing, the blazers and the badge are a tribute to everybody who came before us,” head of the academy Nick Cox told the Manchester Evening News.

“For tһe ѕtаff, уoᴜ’re wаlkіng іn tһe footѕteрѕ of Jімму мᴜrрһу, for tһe рlауerѕ уoᴜ’re wаlkіng іn аn endleѕѕ lіѕt of greаtѕ. Wһen уoᴜ рᴜll tһe Ьlаzer on, tһаt’ѕ wһаt connectѕ ᴜѕ to tһe һіѕtorу.”

United looked the part before the Premier League Cup final and delivered on the pitch, lifting the trophy after two ruthless goals from Ethan Wheatley in the first half.

There were tremendous scenes at the final whistle. The youngsters on the bench sprinted to embrace their teammates, a huddle was formed and “championes, championes, ole ole ole,” was sung. Captain Finley McAllister cherished the moment when raising the trophy.

McAllister travels to away games to support United, whom he’s followed since he could talk. The U18s have been the club’s biggest success story this season and have comfortably finished ahead of City in the league, so it felt appropriate the cup was won at their expense.

“Couple this up with winning the league and these things don’t happen by accident,” Cox added. “It happens through good players, good coaches and the right environment.

“We’re delighted we got to grind out a win toward the end. It was about spirit and determination to win the game. It’s been an interesting week because we don’t carry a large number of players at youth level, but we’ve got injuries at senior level and that impacts plans.

“We’re having to be really creative in how we select our teams, how we try get balance and lots of experience into the players. You’ve seen tonight we took three players off, who caught the eye in the first half, they were substituted and that was all pre-planned.”

Louis Jackson, Harry Amass and Wheatley were replaced at the interval and Erik ten Hag was behind those changes, making sure the youngsters could take part in the final and be fresh enough to make the bench for the first team against Sheffield United just a day later.

Wheatley became the 250th player from the academy to make his debut for United against Sheffield United, which rounded off an unforgettable 24 hours for the striker.

“When I got the call [to come on], there were a bit of nerves, but as soon as I was stripped and ready to go, I was excited,” he told MUTV while fighting a smile.

The ‘simple’ improvement has bred success. United won the FA Youth Cup in 2021/22, with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo starring in that team, and the U18s winning another two trophies this season has been further vindication of the academy’s methods.

Sources have previously stressed ‘individual player development is always key’ and that winning individual games is not the priority – but it’s not a bad byproduct.

“I told the lads whether we win tonight is not going to define where you end up in your career, but it’s going to help in experiencing those moments,” Lawrence said.

“Everything has to be put in perspective, in terms of long-term player development, but of course, it’s a great achievement for the group tonight to win another trophy.

“It was carnage in the dressing room and I got drenched at Wolves [after winning league], so the lads waited for me to get in and had a right good go at me with the water bottles.

“There’s a lot of singing, a lot of noise and they have to enjoy these moments – they’ve earned that right. The boys are naturally competitive and want to play these games.”

The only disappointment from the U18s’ season, which is already a distant memory, was exiting the early rounds of the FA Youth Cup against Swindon Town.

Given their league form, United were expected to go far in the competition and perhaps extend the club’s winning tally, but Swindon sprung a shock in January.

United last won the U18 league in 2017/18 and manager Lawrence, who speaks with a thick Cockney accent, has been praised for his tactical acumen and attacking approach.

He’s worked alongside academy stalwart Colin Little, his assistant, and former United defender Phil Jones has been part of the coaching staff as he studies for his coaching badges.

Jones is studying for his A licence and badges with the help of the United, following his departure after the expiry of his contract at the end of last season.

The 32-year-old is not employed by United and it remains to be seen whether he will continue helping the staff next season. “It’s been great with Phil, he is with us weekly. He spends time with the under-14s and under-18s as well so he gets to experience like the different age groups of the academy,” Lawrence told the MEN in December.

“But for us, he’s been great. He’s obviously from the club in terms of his background and what he’s done here and I think as well for the players, to not just learn from him in terms of the areas of his game and his knowledge, but also some of the off-the-field stuff and what they’re going through – whether it be team selection, how you prepare for games, diet, nutrition.

“Myself and Colin have really appreciated him being involved in the programme and he’s added some real value in a different way. Hopefully, we’ve given him the opportunity to start coaching on the field with players. I know he’s been of massive value and he’ll continue to do that as well.”

Sources have stressed former players ‘regularly engage’ with the academy and Jones’ presence around the youth set-up has been a helpful arrangement for both parties.

There should be U18 players named on the first-team bench until the end of the season and although they might not be given minutes, the experience of being around the first-team environment and in the dressing room will be invaluable for their respective educations.

The U18s have learned a lot this season – and have won trophies while improving.
