Former Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was on holiday on a Croatian island when he was taken ill and rushed to hospital, with former club Ajax issuing a statement.

Former Manchester United, Ajax Amsterdam and Netherlands star Edwin van der Sar was hospitalized in Croatia on Friday after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

The 53-year-old former goalkeeper was on vacation in the countryside. He collapsed and was taken to hospital by helicopter. He remains in intensive care and his first 24 hours are considered critical.
