Manchester United could save at least £60m if they give up on Harry Kane. The Red Devils could instead sign Atalanta star Rasmus Hoylund for a significantly lower fee.

Kane is United’s biggest transfer target this summer. The Tottenham goalkeeper’s contract expires in 2024, so he may start negotiations with overseas clubs for a free transfer from January next year.

This could be the last time Spurs get a big transfer fee for Kane. However, they continue to insist they have no intention of selling him.

United are looking for a striker following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo at the end of last year, but Wout Weghorst’s loan is not a permanent deal. Eric ten Haag is a huge Kane fan, having scored 30 goals in the Premier League for Spurs in a slump this season.

But Tottenham would demand over £100m just to consider letting him go. Uncertainty over United’s ownership may prevent a deal of such magnitude this summer.

Hojland could therefore be a prime target for Ten Haag. Atalanta want at least £40m for the 20-year-old, according to a report in The Athletic.

Even if the Serie A side asked for more, it would still be significantly less than Tottenham could possibly accept for Kane. Hojlund has just joined Atalanta from Sturm Graz in 2022 for a transfer fee of around £14.6m.

In his debut season, he scored nine goals in 32 Serie A appearances, and made headlines in March when he scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Finland in his debut for Denmark.

United will buy Kane’s potential, not the finished product. But if he can strengthen other areas or sign a second striker, he could save money in the transfer market.

Following Karim Benzema’s departure announcement, Real Madrid are also linked with Kane. Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan believes Kane will remain at Spurs after speaking privately with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

“I’ve always felt it, and I’ve talked to Daniel about it, so I think they believe there’s a definite chance he’ll stay,” Jordan told talkSPORT. Other situations are also becoming apparent, he said. The departure sparked interest in Madrid and Harry Kane. I think there’s a good chance he will stay.”
