Latest Manchester United news and transfers as Matthijs de Ligt speculation continues plus reports of Noussair Mazraoui’s ‘medical’

Manchester United have been among the busier Premier League clubs so far this summer and it looks like they will not be finished there. Although it hasn’t been a good summer for United on the injury front, with Leny Yoro sidelined for three months and Rasmus Holjund for six weeks, Erik ten Hag has been active in the window.

Reports suggest players with the next big move to Old Trafford join summer arrivals Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee. United are looking to improve on their eighth-place finish in the Premier League with a chance to bounce back in Europe too, following their qualification for the Europa League.

Matthijs de Ligt earns rave reviews

Manchester United are interested in Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt and Ten Hag knows the defender well from their time at Ajax. While discussions are ongoing to find a breakthrough with the German side, United continue their push for defensive reinforcements.

MEN Sport says: While the Premier League and Germany’s top-flight are different, what is non-negotiable in England is commitment and willingness to fight. It appears that De Ligt has that in abundance. The United boss knows the struggles he faced at the back after injuries decimated his options last season, Yoro has already suffered issues in the infancy of his career while concerns are likely to linger over Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez after their respective injury troubles.

Man United book medical

Manchester United have reportedly booked a medical for Bayern defender Noussair Mazraoui. According to French outlet Foot Mercato, a medical has been booked on Tuesday with Ten Hag looking to acquire the Moroccan before the Community Shield against Manchester City.

Unlike De Ligt, Mazraoui has travelled with Vincent Kompany’s side for the Korea stretch of their pre-season preparations. It has been widely reported that the 26-year-old will sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford.

MEN Sport says: Often the reports have to be taken with a pinch of salt. It has been reported elsewhere that this move hinders on the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The former Crystal Palace defender is reportedly on the radar of West Ham United with Julen Lopetegui’s side eyeing reinforcements at the back.

It does feel premature to accelerate a deal to sign Mazraoui and immediately thrust him into a competitive game with silverware at stake. All signings are a risk but thrusting the defender into the squad, should he sign, could have a negative impact on his form and confidence ahead of the new season.
