Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man United are keeping manager Erik ten Hag “for all the wrong reasons”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the public fan backing of the Dutchman has helped his chances of keeping the job.

Man United fans ‘feel sorry’ for Ten Hag after ‘turmoil’, says Wyness

Wyness claimed United fans, many of whom backed Ten Hag after the FA Cup final win against Man City, “feel sorry” for the manager.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The club have concluded that they should keep Ten Hag in place for another season.

“But they’ve come to that conclusion for all the wrong reasons.

“Certainly the fans getting behind Ten Hag has helped his position.

“I think they feel sorry for him because they can see the turmoil going on behind the scenes.

“If you’re doing it for the wrong reasons, it’s never going to end up being the right decision.”
