MAN UNITED CONFIDENTIAL: A decision on Bruno Fernandes’ future is looming, Red Devils prepare bid for Jarrad Branthwaite, while club make Mother’s Day gaffe - timelineoffuture
September 21, 2024

He has been Manchester United’s Mr Reliable throughout a turbulent season, but a decision over Bruno Fernandes’ future may have to be made sooner rather than later.

Fernandes caused a stir earlier this month when the United captain said he would consider his position after playing for Portugal in Euro ‘24.

‘So, if you want me to be very honest, if I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League, it won’t be until after the Euros,’ he said. ‘We can end the season by winning the FA Cup, then we have the European Championship, which is very important for us.’

ѕoᴜrceѕ tell confіdentіаl tһаt ᴜnіted wаnt to keeр Fernаndeѕ аnd һe wаntѕ to ѕtау – а рoіnt іllᴜѕtrаted Ьу маnаger Erіk ten һаg.

Talk of interest from Saudi Arabia and a number of European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain could lead to a huge bid this summer that United would have to consider in the current financial climate.

The opportunity to cash in on Fernandes and clear his £240,000-a-week wages off the books would be tempting for Ineos as the new minority owners look to drive down costs.

It seems unlikely but the fact it’s even an option is a sign of changing times at Old Trafford.

Fans hit the roof

The 1958 group have again hit out at the Glazer family over their neglect of Old Trafford after social media was awash with videos of water cascading down the roof, stands and in the away dressing-room following the defeat by Arsenal.

While the deluge was almost unprecedented in its scale, the images put the Glazers’ failure to address problems with United’s famous stadium – including the leaky roof – firmly back in the spotlight.

The issue won’t be fixed until a decision is made over the future of the stadium and The 1958, who have organised several anti-Glazer protests, said: ‘Nobody should be shocked. Disrespected the fans. Disrespected the club. Disrespected the history. There is a big difference between loving the club and just caring about results and signings. Which side of the fence are you on?’

Sesko’s a wanted man

Benjamin Sesko’s agent Elvis Basanovic was in the directors’ box at Old Trafford on Sunday, but maybe United fans shouldn’t get too excited just yet – the RB Leipzig striker is also on Arsenal’s radar.

United asked about Sesko before signing Rasmus Hojlund for £72m in the summer, and could still have got the Slovenia international for £43m in the January window.

However, Confidential understands that Sesko’s release clause at Leipzig is determined by his playing time, goals and assists. It has risen to £56m and could reach £65m by the end of the season.

That might be too much for United as they try to comply with FFP while prioritising a defensive midfielder and centre-back before looking at striker options, and Arsenal will one of a number of European rivals considering a move for him.

Sky-high Rooney hits the spot

Safe to say there were plenty of delighted folk at Sky’s Osterley studios on Sunday after Wayne Rooney’s punditry performance following Arsenal’s 1-0 win.

United’s record goal scorer did not mince his words when he alleged that certain injured players are in fact fit enough to play and are instead hanging Ten Hag out to dry by shirking matches.

Rooney has not been short of offers for punditry work since he decided to embrace a media career, and he will be due plenty more bookings if his no-nonsense analysis on Sky Sports is here to stay.

United stars’ have final focus

Rooney may have ruffled a few feathers in the Old Trafford dressing-room by accusing some of United’s injured stars of delaying their comebacks for the FA Cup final on May 25, but Confidential understands that the focus on the Old Trafford dressing-room is firmly fixed on the clash with Manchester City at Wembley – a rematch of last season’s final which City won 2-1.

The United players are keen to wrap up the Premier League season with the remaining games against Newcastle at home on Wednesday night and at Brighton on Sunday, hoping for the consolation of a Europa League or Europa Conference place.

But any real salvation from a wretched season now rests on beating City at Wembley to finish the season with the FA Cup. It wasn’t enough to save Louis van Gaal from the sack in 20016, and now fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag is the man with his job on the line.

Forson future up in the air

While the future of boss Ten Hag is top of the agenda among United fans right now, there are a number of players who face uncertain futures beyond the next couple of weeks, too.

One of those is 19-year-old winger Omari Forson who, Confidential understands, has seen no breakthrough in talks over a new contract.

Sources have indicated that United remain hopeful that an agreement can been reached with Forson, who was handed his first Premier League start against Fulham earlier this season.

Talks have rumbled on since November last year and while confidence is waning in some quarters, a resolution may run deep into the post season before his contract expires in June.

Ten Hag has made an effort to show Forson the pathway in front of him by including him in 12 of the last 16 match day squads in the Premier League, going back the 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham when he was on the bench.

Losing Forson would only elevate the need for a new right winger this summer with both Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood expected to move on, while Antony has failed to live up to his £86m price tag.

Kobbie’s a class act

Kobbie Mainoo may have enjoyed a meteoric rise this season, but the Stockport-born star hasn’t forgotten where he came from.

Mainoo, who still lives with his parents, delighted pupils and teachers last Wednesday by going back to Cheadle Catholic Junior School. The 19-year-old England international took part in a Q&A session in his old classroom and had a football session with his PE teacher outside.

United offer a royal welcome

Royalty headed for Old Trafford last week – and we don’t mean Sir Alex Ferguson’s Treble winners who were back in town for the premiere of the Amazon Prime documentary ‘99’.

Confidential understands that Greater Manchester Police called on United to allow Princess Anne’s helicopter to land on their grounds outside Old Trafford as she made visits to Catch 22, an organisation helping victims and witnesses to crime, and then later to Tameside where she gave the royal seal of approval to works being done on the waterways.

Given she was in town to celebrate successes in the community, perhaps it was no surprise that a visit to United was not on the agenda.

Park’s a work of art

A tribute to United cult favourite Park Ji-Sung is at the centre of a new exhibition that opens at the National Football Museum in the heart of Manchester this week.

Different artists have been commissioned to produce pieces based on their footballing heroes for the Markers exhibition which runs for the next six months.

One of the most critically-acclaimed works is centred around Park imagining if he would become as popular in England as he was in his native South Korea where he was a superstar.

In the exhibition, Park’s brand is enlarged to promote a range of products, an idea that won’t sound far-fetched to those who witnessed the hysteria surrounding the midfielder whenever Sir Alex Ferguson’s side toured the Far East.

Fergie was a huge fan of Park who won four Premier League titles during his spell at Old Trafford between 2005 and 2012, and played a key role in their 2008 Champions League success though he was replaced for the final by Owen Hargreaves.

Promoting Markers, the National Football Museum says: ‘The exhibition highlights there are heroes in every corner of the beautiful game. The exhibition will explore their journey to achieve their goals.’

U18s target Treble glory

This season has proven a bust for the first team but that is certainly not the case for the academy.

United’s U18s won the Premier League North title and added the Premier League Cup by beating Manchester City’s youngsters recently.

Now they face the biggest test of their season as they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the U18s national final on Tuesday night.

The stakes are elevated even further given that the winner will gain access to the UEFA Youth League next season, something which had become part of the package at these two clubs until their first teams fell out of Champions League contention.

Whether United and boss Adam Lawrence find themselves at full tilt remains to be seen, with Harry Amass, Ethan Wheatley, Habeeb Ogunneye and Louis Jackson all options for the first team squad the following night against Newcastle.

Revenge could be on the cards for United given the last time the U18s made the national final, in 2018, they were beaten by a Chelsea team that included Reece James, Conor Gallagher, Billy Gilmour and Callum Hudson-Odoi. United, who have been the gold standard in U18s football this season, will be looking to finish with a flourish.
