Manchester City could get the better of bitter rivals Manchester United in the transfer market this summer with a shock £90million bid for a former key target.

Manchester City could get the better of Manchester United by agreeing a deal with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong this summer.

The Netherlands international has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford thanks to a mixed run of form under Xavi – which once saw him playing in defence.

Pep Guardiola is on the lookout for a replacement for skipper Ilkay Gundogan following his move to the Nou Camp – after withdrawing from the race to sign Declan Rice.

City are not looking to slow things down after winning the Treble – with United also making moved by bringing in Mason Mount despite uncertainty over their ownership.

De Jong won’t come cheap with a three-year deal at Barcelona that runs until the summer of 2026 and Barca are looking for £90m.

The Sun report City’s interest, adding that Guardiola initially tried to sign De Jong from Ajax in 2019.

They add that while the 26-year-old is in no rush to leave Spain, he is ready to make the move despite earning £400,000-a-week at Barcelona.

De Jong was on the verge of a move to Old Trafford last season before talks came about, with Xavi praising his playing ability this year.

He said in February: “He was very clear with me.He wanted to stay with us and there was no doubt about that.

“He’s our player and I’m very happy and satisfied with his performance and leadership. He is in a great time, as is the entire team.””I think he’s having fun on the pitch and that’s the most important thing.

“City will be big favorites to win their fourth consecutive Premier League title next season, which would mean six out of seven games.

Ten Hag will be dreaming of ending their winning streak after lifting the League Cup last season before suffering one last disappointment in the FA Cup.

Arsenalwill also be there after finishing second and then winning the race to sign Rice.
