One of the greatest individual performance in Manchester City history came from a place of anger.

And yet Ederson is expected back in Manchester this week to start pre-season with the Blues, a silver lining of his injury that he can make himself front and centre of Guardiola’s plans from the beginning. He can expect to share goalkeeping duties with Ortega on the tour, but it would be a surprise if he wasn’t given the gloves when the Premier League gets under way.
City have made sure to assure Ederson of his importance to the team, but Guardiola will not mind if his No.1 brings some of the anger that fuelled Gundogan against Villa back with him to Manchester. Ortega has raised the level, and Ederson needs to respond again.
It may not be blindingly obvious in a player who looks so laid-back so often on the pitch, but City should notice a difference from Ederson as he looks to end any debate about who the No.1 goalkeeper should be.
