A look back at the performances of Manchester City’s players as the domestic season was paused to prepare for the October international break.

Manchester City are now more than a fifth of the way through their Premier League campaign They are preparing for the next stage championship.

As Pep Guardiola takes a break for the October international break, he can reflect on the progress that has seen the Blues move two points clear of the top spot in the Championship and top the European table. However, three losses in their last four matches have left questions about whether the team is ready to compete on multiple fronts.

With Kevin De Bruyne out long-term, City have been hit with a string of other injuries over the past four weeks, with John Stones, Jack Grealish, Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva missing matches. This puts more responsibility on the rest of the team and this is how they show up.

Ederson: Picked up where he left off in the Champions League final, adding important saves to his sound distribution. 7

Ortega: Bayern showed an interest in summer and solid performances in the Community Shield and Carabao Cup have solidified his reputation. 7

Lewis: Gets better every time he plays, and has now shown that he can perform in the biggest games. An important member of the first team squad. 8

Walker: An incredible response to his Champions League heartbreak, relishing the leadership with Kevin De Bruyne injured and also improving his attacking ability. 9

Dias: Has added a few trademark blocks to his highlights reel, although hasn’t been able to make the defence feel commanding. 7

Akanji: A fairly quiet start to his second year, often tasked unfortunately with covering for John Stones and the hybrid defender that can do it all. 6

Ake: Admitted he wasn’t great in the defeat at Wolves, and has been asked to play a few different roles with Gvardiol settling at left-back. 6

Gvardiol: A lovely touch for a big man and while there is plenty to master of being a Guardiola defender, he looks to have all the tools to shine. 7

Gomez: The failed experiment to turn him into a left-back appears to be over and he has shown promise further forward, including an assist for Haaland. 7

Rodri: A terrific start to the campaign including more attacking intent was marred by the moment of madness against Forest that proved so costly. 7

Phillips: A big and courageous decision to stay at City this summer but it must have been galling not to fill in for Rodri. 4

Kovacic: Settled in quickly to form a burgeoning partnership with Rodri, although has looked less secure without the Spaniard. 7

Nunes: Made an impact at West Ham coming off the bench for Foden but missed a big opportunity against his former club. 6

Silva: Showed why City were so desperate to keep hold of him, impressing wherever Guardiola has played him in the team. 8

Bobb: A big winner from Palmer and McAtee leaving and will surely get plenty of minutes over the course of the season. 7

Doku: A match-winning performance against West Ham and some more promising cameos, even if he is still raw. 7

Alvarez: Stepped into De Bruyne’s shoes with aplomb, adding goals and assists in the same team as Haaland to become a first-teamer in his own right. 8

Foden: The debate over his role for club and country persists, but there is an increasing maturity and responsibility to his performances. 7

Grealish: Injuries have hampered his start and he has been subject to some weird criticisms on the internet, although the sooner he finds his rhythm the better for the team. 6

Haaland: Eight goals from eight league games puts him on course for another record-breaking season, yet he has not looked his sharpest and missed a number of big chances. 6

Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones haven’t played enough minutes to be marked.
