According to SportBild, Manchester City have made a record bid for World Cup star Josko Gvardiola.

Man City have been negotiating a contract with the central defender from Leipzig for several weeks and have also agreed on personal terms with the player for some time.

However, contrary to some misinformation that has surfaced recently, Leipzig have not yet agreed a transfer fee for the player with City.

Leipzig were expecting €100m for Gvardiol, a transfer fee that would set a world record for a defender and surpassed the €87m Man Utd paid for Leicester’s Harry Maguire in 2019.

And now SportBild announces that City has finally reached 100 million euros with an offer of 90 million plus 10 million bonus.

Leipzig has not yet accepted the offer as they would like the add-ons to include more attainable bonuses. But City are getting closer to signing the centre-back Pep Guardiola so desperately needs.

Gvardiol has emerged as arguably the most exciting young centre-back in Europe over the past year and Guardiola is said to be a big fan of the player.

Guardiola has made buying a new centre-back his top priority this summer and Gvardiol is high on his wish list.

Man City aren’t the only big European side interested in the 21-year-old. Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been linked with the defender in recent months.

However, only City have offered a concrete move and it now looks likely that they will seal the deal.

Gvardiol brilliant in 2022-23

Gvardiol was one of the best defenders at the 2022 World Cup for Croatia, who made it all the way to the semi-finals, finishing third.

Gvardiol also impressed for Leipzig and actually scored for them against Man City in their Champions League last-16 first leg in Germany.

The two teams drew 1-1 before City won the second leg on the way to claiming the title.
