Manchester City are one step closer to signing Matheus Nunes after reaching a verbal agreement with Wolves on the midfielder.
City rejected an offer for Nunes last week, returning a £47million offer that has now been verbally accepted.
Pep Guardiola and City wanted another midfielder after Kevin De Bruyne was injured until the New Year.
Nunes has not trained with Wolves since City’s first offer and Gary O’Neil explained club policy prevented him from missing the last two games.
O’Neil said he expects Nunes to stay at Molineux but City’s latest offer should see him join the European champions before Friday’s transfer deadline.
The deal will come with no extras and now has to be officially finalized with Wolves before personal terms and a doctor’s appointment can be agreed.
As part of the deal, youngster Tommy Doyle will be loaned out for £5million with an option to buy. Should Doyle switch to Molineux permanently, there would also be a substantial resale clause. The Wolves will pay Doyle’s full salary for the duration of the loan.
Doyle’s loan will be separate from the Nunes deal and will not affect this transfer. Doyle made seven appearances in the City first-team but has spent the last two seasons on loan, first with Hamburg and then in the Championship at Cardiff and Sheffield United, where he excelled in the second division.
The 21-year-old, grandson of City legends Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe, will join Molineux after completing his studies at City Football Academy.
Nunes, 25, joined Wolves from Sporting for £42m 12 months ago and Guardiola praised him as City faced Primeira Liga sides in the Champions League.
He will follow Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku through the gates of the Etihad this summer.
