Sergio Gomez has slammed the behaviour of Cole Palmer in the European U21 Championship final, despite the pair being team-mates at Manchester City.

What happened? The Young Lions celebrated continental glory for the first time since 1984 in a hotly contested game in Georgia on Saturday. Palmer’s free-kick just before half-time was deflected by Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones to prove the decisive difference of the day. A massive brawl ensued when the only goal of the match was scored, with Palmer playing a key role in the brawl after celebrating near the bench. Brawls erupted again after James Trafford saved Abel Ruiz’s penalty in stoppage time, but Gomes was unimpressed by the antics of the English players and coaches.

Thoughts: The 22-year-old full-back, who joined Triple Crown City in the summer of 2022, told Cadena SER about Palmer’s actions. Like his teammates, he didn’t want to apologize. I don’t know, I would have celebrated it differently and my teammates would have celebrated it differently.

“They (England) have the attitude they want.It is not the first time something like this has happened to this team. I tried to show the greatest respect to all my rivals. They wanted to celebrate it that way, and even after they missed the penalty. ”

The bigger picture: Gomez took in 23 appearances for City last season – many of those off the bench – and now has Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League winners’ medals to his name.

What next? Gomez has been unable to land another international honour, having previously captured European crowns with Spain at U17 and U19 level, and it remains to be seen what kind of welcome he will give Palmer when the pair return to pre-season training at City ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.
