A cache of Iron Age gold coins found on Anglesey has been declared a treasure trove by the North West Wales Coroner.


The treasure was discovered near the village of Llangoed, located on the island of Anglesey in northwest Wales.

After determining the significance of the find, detectives Peter Cockton, Lloyd Roberts and Tim Watson reported the find to the Portable Antiquities Program, a scheme aimed at recording the growing number of Small finds of archaeological value were found by the public in Great England.

The treasure includes 15 gold coins called staters, minted between 60 and 20 BC at three different mints in what is now Lincolnshire. They are attributed to the Corieltavi tribe, who inhabited the geographical area of ​​the modern East Midlands during the late Iron Age. The Corieltauvi were primarily an agricultural society that began minting coins in the early 1st century BC.

Sean Derby, archaeologist at the Historic Environment Archive and head of recording the PAS Cymru find at the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust, said: “This treasure is a wonderful example of a Rich archaeological sites exist in North West Wales. Although the vicinity of the discovery does not provide any clues as to its origin, the discovery site is within an area of ​​known prehistoric and Roman activity and helps advance our understanding of the discovery. The design of each coin is highly stylized, inspired by the gold coins of Philip II of Macedonia. Macedonian coins depict a bust of Apollo on the obverse (front) and a chariot drawn by two horses with a charioteer on the obverse (back).

In the case of staters, the front artistically features Apollo’s crown and hair, while the back features a stylized horse with a triangular head, accompanied by various surrounding symbols.
