The FA Cup final was on the agenda to discuss with Onana but he brought it up himself. “We are going there to win, we are Manchester United,” he added.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, we always approach it with a winning mentality. We know it’s a difficult game against a very good team, but it’s going to be a nice game to play.”

Manchester City have become the first team in Premier League history to win four successive titles and won 3-1 against United at the Etihad when the sides last met.

In that game, Onana provided a sensational pass from a goal kick to Bruno Fernandes, who assisted Marcus Rashford for a stunning opening goal at the Etihad.

Onana was asked how important his distribution would be. “The most important thing is the victory,” he said, “but yes, a modern goalkeeper has to be pragmatic with the players and team you have.

“So if I have to play the ball long, I will do that. If I have to play it short, I’ll do that, but I always try to make the best decision for the team, even sometimes if it’s wrong. That means taking risks and I’ve got a lot of personality, so I’m not afraid of that.”

He continued: “We know how important this game is for us and we can still get in Europe, so it’s a big final for us. It would mean a lot to win it, for the club and fans.

“It would also obviously mean a lot for us because it would give us something nice at the end of the season. The best way is to win against City and we’ll be ready for them.”

Onana played against City in last season’s Champions League final for Inter Milan and was on the losing side. “Well, just scoring one more goal than them! I think that’s important,” Onana said as he laughed at a question about learning from that game in Istanbul.

“This is what we’ll try to do and hopefully we score much more than them on Saturday and go back home with the trophy. Every game is different.

“I was saying it before this game when I did an interview and the journalist was telling me Brighton are used to winning against United. But today (last Sunday), we won and everything is different. We lost twice against City already so we have to make sure it doesn’t happen anymore.”

Onana will give everything to secure his first victory against City in the FA Cup final but it won’t be easy. United need their goalkeeper at his best at Wembley.
