Manchester City’s former captain Ilkay Gundogan is thought to be exploring his options with his time at Barcelona running out

Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan reportedly contacted Manchester City recently over a sensational return to the Premier League champions.

City supporters were keen to keep hold of their captain last summer after he produced a brilliant final season for the Blues as they secured the Treble. However, the desire for a new challenge at a club close to his heart was too much for Gundogan to resist and he agreed to move to Xavi’s Barcelona at the expiry of his contract.

However, 12 months on a lot has changed in Catalonia with Hansi Flick now the manager. Reports in Spain have suggested the former Bayern Munich head coach was keen to offload Gundogan this summer as Barca battle against Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions.

Now, according to Catalunya Radio’s ‘La TdT’, the 33-year-old has reached out to his former employers about the possibility of returning to the Etihad Stadium. City may be thinking hard about this prospect considering they need cover in central midfield after Kalvin Phillips departed on loan to Ipswich Town last week.
