There has been turbulence with Dalot’s development. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was so unconvinced he insisted United target a British right back a year after the prudent £19million they invested in Dalot. The arrival of the £50m Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a slew of injuries and the selection of the revived Timothy Fosu-Mensah over Dalot led to a season-long loan with AC Milan in 2020.

Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Dalot has missed a mere eight club games through injury. He and Alejandro Garnacho are the only two outfield players who have avoided injury in a season the United medical department has resembled an episode of Casualty.

That durability has doubtless contributed to Dalot’s recognition as the United players’ player of the year. He is sporting a fitness band that measures his sleeping patterns and recovery. Dalot’s partner, Claudia, gave birth to their firstborn daughter, Clara, in November. All four grandparents assist with childcare.

Erik ten Hag was dissatisfied with the sleep, recovery and nutrition of the United players when he took over. Dalot monitors all three tenets obsessively.

“I became a little bit more obsessed, especially after meeting Cristiano and spending a lot of time with him,” he explains. “Having this obsession about being available, not focusing on the quality of your football first – first ensuring you’re available.

“And after that it was a routine for me: try to evolve in other things. Training even better, playing well, that game part comes after when you’re mentally and physically ready to play a lot of games.

“I could give you a list of things I do every day but basically it’s just prioritise the normal things that everybody talks about. But I think the secret is being consistent, doing everything every single day. Which I think is the most difficult thing and the thing that I’ve changed the most is the consistency.

“I’ve been doing all these things; sleeping, the sleeping patterns, the nutrition, the recovery. Everything that involves this. I think these are the three main aspects. I think it has been the consistency and I’ve been doing this. [The fitness band] is just a tool I use to track a little bit of what I’m doing every day.

“In Portugal, there’s not this culture, unfortunately, the same as in England. In England, they value a lot what is English, what is the English person, the English culture, they value a lot, their country. And in Portugal, it’s more that what is from abroad is good, we don’t see too much what iust going on inside the country.

“So there’s always this culture about how we have to survive so we can go abroad to do what we want to do. Maybe it can be something related to that, always having this constant mentality all of the time we try to prove ourselves that we can be even better and better each year, so it can be related to that.

“He (Fernandes) is showing that he’s doing everything that he can to play for the club and to help the club. He’s been available [almost] every game and it shows that if you are available, you are closest to play games.

“This is the kind of way that I think every club, every squad should go because if you have 70-80 per cent of the players available every season, I think it’s going to be a lot easier than if you have 10-15 per cent.”

Another trait that endears players to Mourinho is playing through the pain barrier. Dalot has done so, most noticeably with a bandage strapped to his head during the second half of the siege at Brentford. There have been a few other occasions.

“That’s part of being a football player,” he stresses. “Are you ready to cope with it? Are you ready to make an extra mile for the team? Especially this season.

“And there are games where you have to forget a little bit of the pain. The problems that you are having. Because the team needs you, because there are no players. That obviously happened sometimes this season, but for me it’s just… In my head it’s normal.”

Mourinho would approve.
