Frank Lampard has been out of work since his second spell as Chelsea boss came to an end last summer.

Frank Lampard would win the Premier League title as Manchester City boss, according to Harry Redknapp.

The Chelsea legend, and former City player, has been out of work since the end of the 2022/23 season when his temporary stint back in the Stamford Bridge dugout came to a close. Since then he’s been linked with a number of sides including Burnley, Leicester City and Canada’s national team, though is yet to agree to a deal.

Redknapp, who is Lampard’s uncle, reckons the ex-Chelsea and Everton manager, 45, has what it takes to get a top team with top players firing on all cylinders, and thinks he’d win plenty of trophies if he replaced Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.

He was sacked mid-way through his second season and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who won the Champions League a few months later. 12 months after his Chelsea exit he joined Everton, and successfully kept them in the Premier League after the Toffees’ rocky start under predecessor Rafa Benitez.

But after failing to improve the side in his second season, he was given his marching orders. That said, Redknapp reckons Lampard did a decent job at Goodison Park.

“He did ok at Everton, but again Everton was tough,” he said. “Sean Dyche has done great at Everton, keeping them up, but that’s about where Everton are as a club, in a bit of turmoil. They’re looking for an owner, it wasn’t an easy job to go into keeping them up, like when they turned it around that when they were 2-0 down at home and come back against Palace. Who’s achieving anything now? He couldn’t do nothing there.”

Following Graham Potter’s dismissal as Chelsea boss in 2023, Lampard returned for a second stint, this time as interim head coach. But the Blues were in such a mess following Todd Boehly’s arrival that the former England midfielder struggled to get a tune out of the players – and hasn’t returned to a mangerial position since.

“Like everything, you need good players. Chelsea was a poisoned chalice,” Redknapp added. “Whoever’s been at Chelsea recently, they haven’t managed to turn it around, it’s been hard. It was for Pochettino this year, it was hard for Potter, it’s just that it was a hard gig. They recruited badly. Frank was left with a very average team, which wasn’t easy.

“For Frank, I’d like to see him get a team where he’s got a chance to achieve something. He had no chance at Everton to achieve anything except keeping them up, then he’s gone back to Chelsea, who were in a mess had a transfer embargo. He knows the game inside out. He’s got great knowledge of the game. He was a fantastic professional. Frank needs to go somewhere where he’s got a chance to be successful.”
