For the player’s sake, Emile Smith Rowe has to move on. The attacker turns 24 at the end of this month and he cannot afford to make just four starts for another season or risk his career starkly stagnating.

Arsenal fans will be left sore seeing an academy player leave but from a financial point of view, it makes sense for the club to sell up given all of his fee will count as pure profit under Premier League spending rules. It’s not like he won’t have takers.

Is Emile Smith Rowe going to get the number of minutes he wants and needs at Arsenal? The answer is no.

So for him and for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, he needs to go. And it’s a win-win situation for all concerned.

Arsenal can cash in and finally get a good transfer sum in for a player – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017/18 for £35million remains their record sale – and Smith Rowe can get the move and minutes his talent requires.
