Chris Sutton and Ian Ladyman have named their top five Premier League players of the season on Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off! and Arsenal stars have dominated the ranks.

Things are reaching boiling point at both ends of the table with Man City and Arsenal locked in a two-horse race to the title, while Luton and Nottingham Forest scrap to avoid the drop.

Only three games remain in the English top-flight season with City going for a fourth consecutive title and former Premier League winner Sutton joined co-host and Mail Sport’s Football Editor Ladyman in running over their top performers of the season.

Manchester United’s tumultuous campaign means no member of Erik ten Hag’s squad made the cut, but there is a spot for one Chelsea star who has exceeded the expectations of both Ladyman and Sutton.

Phil Foden has been Man City’s best performer of the season on the other side of Manchester and was crowned Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year on Friday and there have been a host of brilliant individual outings within Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team.

‘At four I am going to say Gabriel the Arsenal centre-half and defenders are important with Arsenal their centre-half pairing are the bedrock of that backline and I am going to go for Kai Havertz just because of his whole story.

‘Bit of adversity he has come back from, when he moved from Chelsea to Arsenal, he has been a really big player for them,’ added Sutton.

The inclusion of Havertz prompted a discussion about the mental resilience of the Arsenal playmaker who has battled back from early season difficulties following his move from Chelsea to become a key figure under Arteta.

Ladyman heaped praise on the German international, stating: ‘I remember at the start of the season when Arsenal beat Man United and talked about Havertz looking like a fish out of water.

‘We wondered whether he would ever manage to kick a ball in a straight line for Arsenal and look at him now, absolutely flying.

‘One of the things that I find myself in awe of with athletes is the mental side of the game. The mental strength that athletes show on a regular basis to overcome difficult patches like that.

‘I absolutely know I couldn’t do that and I am absolutely full of admiration for Havertz.’
