David de Gea’s efforts to get Manchester United back into contract negotiations are compounded by Erik ten Hag’s reluctance to spend money on a new goalkeeper.

De Gea, 32, will become a free agent next weekend and United have told him he will have to cut his current weekly wages of £375,000 to extend his 12-year tenure at Old Trafford.

United’s latest offer is said to be in excess of £200,000 a week. However, the Spaniard realizes the Ten Hag manager has other priorities as he plans how to spend his £120m transfer fee.And his advisers believe this will strengthen their position over the coming days.

Ten Hag have made it a priority to sign a striker with proven pedigree and are also targeting enthusiasts in midfield and defence.

The Mason Mount negotiations with Chelsea show how every pound counts now. United’s latest offer of £50m plus an additional £5m package has been rejected.launched his bid with a £40m offer, half of Chelsea’s value, and Mount was set to enter the final year of his contract. The London club has reduced its applications due to the need to raise funds for FFP purposes.

But United need to up their offer by £65m to sign the England midfielder.Ten Hag also plans to increase its budget after announcing it is accepting offers from Harry Maguire, Anthony Martial, Fred, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay, Anthony Elanga and Fred.

The sale ofcould add a further £100m to Ten Hag’s spoils of war. Still, the Dutchman would prefer De Gea to remain his No1 rather than spend a hefty sum on a backup goalkeeper.

Nottingham Forest are keen to sign Dean Henderson for £25million but the England international could still return as first choice after a year on loan at the City Ground if De Gea leaves.

Forest is already looking for alternative targets should this happen. United have been linked with Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Andre Onana, the Cameroonian international from Inter Milan.

Onana, 27, would provide Ten Hag with a very high quality cast that De Gea could not. But FFP restrictions mean United don’t have enough cash to meet all of his manager’s demands this summer. The Glazer family’s protracted negotiations to sell the club did not help his transfer manoeuvres.

But after the Dutchman funded a net spend of nearly £200million when he took charge last year, meeting UEFA’s financial commitments would have been a problem if they had opted for another huge non-sale spend.
