Manchester United are pushing forward to finalize the transfer of Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. Previously, The Peoples Person reported that United were eyeing the Dutch defender as a potential alternative to Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, in case that deal fell through. Since then, United have shown a growing interest in De Ligt, with Bayern reportedly willing to sell him for €70 million.

Recently, more signs emerged indicating that De Ligt’s move to United is imminent. Reports suggest that De Ligt has already informed Bayern of his desire to leave, largely due to his dissatisfaction under manager Thomas Tuchel. Additionally, Bayern’s pursuit of defenders Hiroki Ito and Jonathan Tah hints that De Ligt might face reduced playing time next season. Discussions have already occurred with several Premier League clubs, including United.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg confirmed United’s interest, stating, “We’ve been told that Manchester United have opened talks about Matthijs de Ligt on the player’s side now. Understand that #MUFC have gathered more information about the 24 y/o in recent days as he can leave Bayern with a suitable offer as revealed. De Ligt, ready to leave Bayern and open to join ManUtd as he will not become the central defender No. 4 or 5. Still no contact between the clubs yet.”

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano also mentioned, “Manchester United made contact with Matthijs de Ligt’s camp as he’s one of the options being considered as new CB — including Branthwaite. De Ligt, open to joining United even with no UCL football. Bayern could sell De Ligt this summer, up to Man United’s decision.”

The Telegraph added that while United have not yet contacted Bayern directly, they seem poised to make a move. The newspaper suggested that United might pay significantly less than the £65 million Bayern paid Juventus for De Ligt in 2022. While De Ligt could strengthen United’s defense next season, his recent injury issues might be a concern for a club already struggling with injuries.
