Casemiro and Raphael Varane are heading for the exit but the jury’s out on Marcus Rashford… CHRIS WHEELER rates each star’s chances of leaving in Man United’s summer fire-sale - timelineoffuture
July 3, 2024

A summer of change looms at Manchester United with all but a handful of the club’s stars understood to be available at the right price.

New co-owners Ineos are committed to re-shaping the squad and driving down the wage bill to comply with Financial Fair Play, with United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League only exacerbating the problem.

Mail Sport revealed last month that the exodus from Old Trafford could hit double figures, and we have rated the likelihood of each player leaving.

PRIZE GUYS

Kobbie Mainoo 0/10

A diamond of the academy system, Mainoo is enjoying a breakthrough season. Ineos have a vision for United’s future and the 18-year-old fits in perfectly. He will be rewarded with a new contract this summer.

Alejandro Garnacho 0/10

Another star pupil from the academy, the 19-year-old Argentina international is in his second season with the first-team and continues to go from strength to strength. Garnacho is an exciting winger in the best traditions of United and a key figure in the long-term strategy.

BIG EARNERS

Casemiro 8/10

Excellent in his first season, the Brazilian’s £70m move to United from Real Madrid hasn’t aged well. The club want to wipe his £375,000-a-week wages off the books, and the 32-year-old was high on the agenda when former football director John Murtough flew to Saudi Arabia for talks in December. Al-Hilal are one of several clubs showing an interest.

OUT OF CONTRACT

Raphael Varane 9/10

United have decided not to extend the Frenchman’s £340,000-a-week contract when it runs out on June 30 and Varane is unwilling to negotiate a pay-cut. The 31-year-old will move on with the Saudi Pro League a likely destination amid interest from Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr.

Antony Martial 10/10

Another high-earning Frenchman on £250,000-a-week, Martial will leave Old Trafford after nine seasons this summer having never fulfilled his huge potential at United. Injuries have played a part and he has made just 19 appearances so far in a farewell season that will end with a whimper – unless Martial has got a Cup Final winner in him.

Jonny Evans 6/10

The veteran Northern Ireland defender made a surprise return to United on a short-term deal last season and earned a one-year contract. Evans has played well every time he has been needed, and United must decide whether to offer him a new deal at the age of 36. If not, a coaching role is another option.

Tom Heaton 6/10

United also have a decision to make on the 38-year-old former England goalkeeper has only made three appearances since rejoining the club in 2021, and is currently third choice behind Onana and Altay Bayindir.

Omari Forson 6/10

The academy graduate is highly-rated by Ten Hag and has made six first-team appearances this season, but Forson has yet to accept United’s contract offer with two months to go before he becomes a free agent.

Brandon Williams 9/10

The defender has spent the last two seasons on loan at Norwich and Ipswich, and United are unlikely to take up the option of a 12-month extension on his contract when it ends this summer.

STAY OR GO?

Luke Shaw 3/10

One of United’s best performers when fit, but thigh and hamstring injuries have restricted him to just 15 games this season. Shaw turns 29 this summer, but it’s unlikely the club would let him go unless they received a huge offer.

Lisandro Martinez 3/10

Andre Onana 2/10

Another former Ajax man, Ten Hag put his faith in Onana when he made the bold decision to ditch David de Gea, and the Cameroon goalkeeper hasn’t let him down despite a shaky start. Errors in his last two games are a reminder the 28-year-old still has some way to go, but United seem happy with him.

Harry Maguire 5/10

Maguire has resurrected his Old Trafford career since United accepted a £30m bid from West Ham last summer, and emerged as arguably their most reliable centre-back this season. But he has just turned 31 and United could be tempted by another offer.

Christian Eriksen 8/10

The Dane has been a peripheral figure this season and a parting of the ways will be in the best interests of him and the club. The 32-year-olds has looked his age when called upon.

Diogo Dalot 4/10

The Portugal defender has prospered under Ten Hag, with his performances and ability to stay injury-free one of the few positives from a difficult season. It would be a surprise to see him go.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7/10

United will listen to offers for the right-back, who cost £50m when he signed from Crystal Palace in 2019. He has been linked with a return to Selhurst Park and is attracting interest from Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Victor Lindelof 6/10

The Swede’s season has been disrupted by groin surgery in January. Lindelof’s future is linked in to what happens with Maguire and Evans as United continue to assess their defensive options.

Scott McTominay 5/10

The midfielder is in a similar situation to Maguire, having bailed out Ten Hag with some big performances – and goals – after turning down West Ham last summer. McTominay also has one year left on his contract plus a 12-month option but, unlike Maguire, is homegrown and would be more profitable if sold.

Tyrell Malacia 3/10

The Dutchman hasn’t played at all this season due to a persistent knee problem, leaving United without a specialist left-back in Shaw’s absence. Malacia’s fitness issues would make it difficult to sell him at the moment.

Injuries have forced Tyrell Malacia to watch the entirety of his second season at Old Trafford from the sidelines

Altay Bayindir 3/10

The Turkish goalkeeper has only made one appearance since a £4.3m move from Fenerbahce and must decide if he is happy sitting on the bench as Onana’s No.2.

OUT ON LOAN

Mason Greenwood 7/10

Once the rising star at United, Greenwood has been rehabilitating his career in the wake of off-the-field issues. United have held transfer talks with other Spanish clubs and would prefer to sell him, but it’s not out of the question that Greenwood returns.

Donny van de Beek 8/10

Even if Eintracht Frankfurt don’t take up the £9.5m option to turn Van de Beek’s loan into a permanent deal, United will look to offload the Dutchman whose career in England has been a flop.

Facundo Pellistri 8/10

The Uruguayan is spending the second half of the season at Granada, and doesn’t appear to have a future at United with so much competition in the wide areas.

Hannibal Mejbri 7/10

His loan at Sevilla hasn’t gone well and it’s highly doubtful the Spanish club will pay £17m to keep the Tunisia midfielder. United will have to find him a new home.

Hannibal Mejbri has managed just a single start since joining Sevilla on loan in January

Alvaro Fernandes 9/10

Benfica are expected to trigger the £5m option to sign the Spanish defender at the end of his loan.

IN ON LOAN

Sofyan Amrabat 9/10

Mainoo’s emergence has limited Amrabat’s opportunities and United will allow him to return to Fiorentina without activating a £21.4m option to buy.
