“We stayed calm when we went behind and we just played our football, we grew into the game – I feel we’ve come a long way to come here and do what we did,” the midfielder said.

“We could have controlled it better when we went 3-2 up but we’re playing one of the best teams in the world. You’re going to make mistakes and it’s about how you react.

“Even the best teams in the world come here and struggle. It’s not a bad outcome to draw the game – a lot of positives and a lot of things we can work on.

“We go again now. No matter how you feel – Madrid are always in the game and will always have another chance so you have to stay focused until the final whistle.

“Overall, it’s not a bad result for us – to come here and score three goals, we’ll take it back to the Etihad.”

Foden hit another brilliant goal, curling a thumping strike from the edge of the box to give Real keeper Andriy Lunin no chance.

No Premier League player has scored more goals from outside the box this season, and in a campaign of wonderful hits, Foden said his strike in Madrid was one of his best.

“It’s one of the best goals I’ve scored,” he added. “I always have this special ability in and around the box where I see myself scoring a lot of goals – it’s one of those you practice on the training ground after training.

“When I received it on the edge of the box, I thought why not try it. Thankfully I got a chance in the game to do that.

“I made good contact with it and when it went in and in the top corner, I was delighted.

“It’s one of the best feelings – to score in one of the best stadiums in the world, I can say I’ve ticked it off the bucket list now.”

The draw has set up an exciting second leg and the England international said the fans need to bring the noise to the Etihad to replicate last season’s brilliant 4-0 win that secured a place in the Champions League final on a famous night.

“It’s going to be difficult, but we have to have the confidence as we did it last year and we have to believe in ourselves and hopefully we can do it again,” Foden said.

“We’re going to need the fans – they pushed us all the way last year and we know we’re capable of doing it.”
