Arsenal suffer HUGE blow as new £33m midfielder Mikel Merino is ruled out for ‘a few weeks’ after Gabriel landed on him during his first training session, causing ‘a small fracture’

Mikel Merino soldiered on in his first Arsenal training session after suffering a suspected fractured shoulder which is set to sideline him for ‘weeks’, revealed Mikel Arteta.

Defender Gabriel landed on the 28-year-old new signing, who officially joined from Real Sociedad on Tuesday, in training.

Ahead of Arsenal’s match against Brighton on Saturday, Arteta said: ‘Yes, very unfortunate. Yesterday (Thursday) he had a collision and he has a shoulder injury unfortunately. It looks like he’s going to be out for a few weeks.

Ramsdale joined Arsenal in August 2021 and was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year for the 2022-23 campaign. Though last season he was dropped for David Raya in September and has been largely on the bench ever since.

The move ends a frustrating saga for the England man.

Arteta added: ‘I have really positive memories of the player that we signed, the excitement that he brought, what he actually did in a very short period.

‘He earned the respect and love of everybody at the club and externally. He was part of the national team and he helped us to earn some success.

‘He looked really excited and happy the other day. He’s joining a great club and a great coach, he looks really excited so we are all happy for him.

‘It was the best for the three parties, we’ve done it and we have to move on. This is football.’
