admin During a family vacation in Sweden, an 8-year-old child discovered a 900-year-old Viking artifact on the beach.
While walking toward the beach, Bruno Tillema noticed an intriguing object and picked it up, according to a Sept. 8 press release from Gotland County Administration.
“I just picked it up off the ground and thought ‘What is this?’ ” Tillema told the Council. “’Perhaps a strange part of a house?“I go looking for fossils. Then my mother came and asked me what I had in my hand. Then I said, “Some strange metal.” »
Andreas Tillema, Bruno’s father, said in an interview with Newsweek that he and his wife had just given Bruno a book about fossils and as a result he was “actively scanning the ground with his eyes.”
To clarify what Bruno had found, the family spoke to a relative who was an archaeologist.“A video call later made it clear,” Andreas said.
A bronze belt buckle shaped like an animal’s head dating from the Viking Age, which lasted from 800 to 1100 AD, was discovered by Bruno.
To report on the monument, the Tillemas family contacted county authorities.
The second artifact, a ring lock, was discovered after Gotland Museum conducted an investigation at the scene.
Bronze was used to make two locks. In the late Iron Age or early Viking Age, they were applied to clothing.
Ring locks are used in both male and female burials in Gotland, although animal head locks are mainly found on female burials. The commission said the graves associated with the loop may have been burned.
The National Antiquities Office will decide whether to display the locks in the collection after maintenance.
“I’m glad I could do it,” Bruno said. “I feel like I’ve done something great and now I can share it with you.”
According to Andreas, his son is happy to finally be able to share this story, as he told Newsweek.
“We were asked to keep this a secret until the site was thoroughly inspected,” Andreas said.”He even started thinking about becoming an archaeologist when he grew up. His dream was to find a T. Rex skull.”
The National Antiquities Office determines the researcher’s reward.
