Alfie Haaland has responded to Roy Keane’s comments about his son Erling’s current appearance.

The Manchester City star has enjoyed great success since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in June 2022.

However, former Manchester United captain Keane recently had some harsh words for the Norwegian player during City’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal, saying that City were playing an all-round game like a League Two player. He claimed that he showed a good game performance.

Surprisingly, Haaland’s father Alfie then hit back himself by explaining how the former Republic of Ireland international would feature in the story.

In an interview with Viaplay Fotball, he said:

“You probably think it’s a little bit okay to make this (criticism) up. But the team is winning and Erling is still the top scorer, so it shouldn’t have been that bad.” A knee injury he sustained sparked an early feud.

Four years later, Keane drove a stud into Haaland’s leg during the Manchester derby.

The collision did not lead to his subsequent retirement from professional sport, as Keane did not sustain a long-term injury to his other knee that forced him to retire. However, City and Haaland briefly considered taking legal action over the incident.

Keene admitted some time later in his autobiography that his intentions toward his rival were premeditated.

“I don’t know what the big deal is, I give Erling Haaland praise every week, I give Manchester City praise, and I think he’s an amazing striker,” began the Irishman in his scathing review of Haaland.

“But his general play is that of a League Two player. And I’m glad you are not agreeing with me, I don’t expect people to agree with me.

“His general play, week in, week out is nowhere near good enough.

“As a goal scorer and a striker, the best – and I said that. His link-up play, the way he lays the ball off, sometimes the options he gives his teammates or the options he doesn’t give them – as a striker and a goal scorer the best in the world, but his other play is that of a League Two player.”
