Man Utd will have decisions to make over a couple of key midfielders this summer and their ideal combination is one signing away from completion.

With Ineos casting a new eye on football operations at the club, it is players like Casemiro who might come under scrutiny. He still has three years left on a deal that makes him one of the highest earners at the club and if this season is evidence of decline setting in then it is time to cut your losses. If any Saudi Pro League clubs show interest this summer then United will surely do business.

There will be more departures in midfield as well. Eintracht Frankfurt already look unlikely to take the option on Donny van de Beek’s loan but the Dutchman has no future at Old Trafford, while Christian Eriksen has become a peripheral figure and is frustrated at his lack of game time. Neither player is likely to bring in much of a fee but United should take what they can and clear the salaries off the wage bill.

If Casemiro, Van de Beek and Eriksen do leave then Scott McTominay should stay. As an academy graduate with a relatively high value, there is an attraction to selling him for financial fair play reasons but he is a valuable squad player and a real goal threat and it would weaken United if he was to depart.

There is a decision to be made on loan midfielders this summer as well. United have the chance to make Sofyan Amrabat’s loan permanent for £21million. With finances tight and the Fiorentina loanee yet to make much of an impression, it seems sensible to pass over that option and look elsewhere. In the other direction, Hannibal has barely made an impact at Sevilla, but he is likely to attract interest from across Europe this summer and at 21 it is time to cash in.

That would leave McTominay, Mainoo, Mount and Fernandes as options in midfield. Two new additions would be ideal to really provide strength in the centre of the pitch and both should be holding midfielders. United have been linked with a move for Joao Gomes of Wolves and he has impressed in his first season in the Premier League.
