Man United beat Crystal Palace 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup and this is how the players performed at Old Trafford.

Manchester United got their Carabao Cup defense off to a perfect start with a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial secured United’s place in the fourth round of the competition.

United editor of the Manchester Evening News, Samuel Luckhurst, was in the press box covering the match and here are his player ratings on a night where a number of players shined.

Andre Onana

Could have played in his slippers to earn one of the easiest clean sheets of his career until an alert stop in the 67th minute. 7

Mason Mount

Created four goalscoring chances on his return from injury and United scored two of them. Substituted at half-time in what was his best performance for some time. 8

Sofyan Amrabat

A worthy auxiliary left-back – where he played a handful of times under Erik ten Hag – and he moved into midfield to supplement attacks. 7

Casemiro

Authoritative in midfield with Mason Mount and then Amrabat, he scored one and created another in a game many would have rested him for. 8

Harry Maguire

Made a vital interception with the game goalless on the only occasion Palace threatened all night. An uplifting evening for the former captain. 7

Raphael Varane

Captained United and coasted through an hour against a harmless Crystal Palace side. A sterner test awaits on Saturday. 7

Diogo Dalot

His best performance for United this calendar year. Made a fine run and crossed invitingly for Alejandro Garnacho to make it 1-0. 8

Facundo Pellistri

Worked tirelessly all night though his use of the ball was seldom convincing. Yet to truly excel as a starter for United. 6

Hannibal Mejbri

Received a couple of pep talks from Ten Hag as he struggled to influence proceedings with the ball. Still acquitted himself decently. 6

Alejandro Garnacho

Broke the deadlock clinically by reading Diogo Dalot’s pull-back. A fulfilling evening as he played out the duration. 7

Anthony Martial

Ended his anonymity with a terrific half-volley that killed the tie before the hour. Had to score on his first start of the season to make it a personally positive night. 7

Subs

Victor Lindelof

Rarely unnerved at left-back. 6

Jonny Evans

Almost scored again. 6

Dan Gore

Looked at ease on his debut. 7

Donny van de Beek

A rare appearance. 6

Rasmus Hojlund

Came on late. 6

Manager

Rotated sensibly and with Christian Eriksen absent, the decision to start Casemiro was especially key. As was playing Mount in midfield. 8
