Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scored the 44th goal of his Premier League career this weekend as the defending champions beat Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland has enjoyed unprecedented success since arriving in English football last summer, scoring 36 goals in the 2022/23 Premier League to set a new post-1992 record for goals in a season. In total, the Norwegian scored 52 goals in all competitions, also breaking Man City’s club scoring record in a campaign, beating the old record of 38 goals set by Tommy Johnson in 1928/ 29.

Entering the 2023/24 season, Haaland has 8 goals in the Premier League after 6 matches. He is the clear favorite to win the Golden Boot again and on current form he is on track to better the 36 goals he scored in the league last season to capable of setting a new record.

The next goal in Haaland’s sights is 50 in the Premier League. This in itself is nothing remarkable, as 123 players in the Premier League era have achieved half-centuries of goals, including Danny Murphy (50), Andrew Johnson (51), Trevor Sinclair (52 ), Steven Fletcher (53). and Andy Carroll (54). No fewer than 34 have scored 100 goals or more, including 10 who have reached 150.

What’s amazing is how quickly Haaland reached the 50-goal mark. Given his high scoring rate, he could very well score his 50th Premier League goal in the coming weeks and thus become the fastest player to do so to date, possibly even less than 20 match compared to the current record.

Currently, the record for scoring at least 50 goals in the Premier League belongs to Andrew Cole, who did it in 65 games during his time with Newcastle and Manchester United. This is slightly faster than Alan Shearer, who scored his first 50 Premier League goals in 66 games at Blackburn.

Ruud van Nistelrooy did it in 68 games for Manchester United, while it took Fernando Torres and Mohamed Salah 72 games each to reach 50 Premier League goals for Liverpool.

Haaland scored his first 44 goals in just 41 appearances, giving him an average of 1.07 goals per game.Continuing at this pace will see him reach 50 in his 45th Premier League match. Assuming he continues to play every league game, his 45th appearance will be in the upcoming Manchester derby at Old Trafford on October 29.

Even if it doesn’t happen that quickly, it will it’s inconceivable that Haaland won’t break the 50-goal record at some point due to his lead at the curve. He will need to score five goals or less in his next 24 Premier League games to avoid breaking that record.
