Senior Manchester United players are angry with Erik ten Hag for the way in which David de Gea’s Old Trafford career was brought to a brutal close.

The club legend left United this summer after 12 years of steadfast service, during which he established a reputation as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

Although his form fluctuated significantly in the latter part of his United career, the Spain international won the Golden Glove award last season and was the club’s player of the year four times.

Despite his dedication to the United cause, the 32-year-old was forced to leave this summer after a bizarre contract dispute that left him without the chance to say goodbye to fans he has served for over a year decade.

According to The Sun, Ten Hag’s treatment of De Gea angered a group of players, as he decided to replace the Premier League champion with Andre Onana but did little to help the player’s career Dutch.

Ten Hag has completed the £50m signing of the goalkeeper he worked with at Ajax, but the Cameroon international has endured a nightmare start to his career at United.

Onana was at fault again in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich as his terrible mistake allowed Leroy Sané to open the scoring in a 4-3 win for the Bundesliga giants.

Speaking after the defeat, which marked his fourth consecutive loss, Onana said: “That’s the life of a goalkeeper.”

“It was difficult. We started very well. After my mistake, we lost control of the match.

“It was a difficult situation for us, especially for me because I was the one who let the team down.

“We held the ball very well, they didn’t create any chances, I made a mistake with their first shot on target. This was the key point and the whole team fell because of this mistake. If we don’t win today it’s because of me.
