It would have been a really smart bit of business for the Red Devils.

Manchester United could save the £4.3million invested in former Fenerbache goalkeeper Altay Bayindir if they decide to make a timely transfer of Kasper Schmeichel.

The Dane was released by OGC Nice on Friday and is currently a free agent. A brief statement posted by Nice on Twitter reads: “#OGCNice and @kschmeichel1 have mutually agreed to terminate the contract with the Danish agent.

The club wishes him every success in his future career. The 36-year-old has 12 months left on his contract but his contract was terminated after he fell out of favor with the club at the end of last season.

Nice have instead signed PSG’s Marcin Bułka, who has scored in the team’s first three Ligue 1 games against Lille, Lorient and Lyon. Schmeichel played 36 league games last season and kept 11 clean sheets. He joined the club after his contract expired in a draw against Leicester City last summer.

United were on the lookout for a new keeper to play second fiddle to Andre Onana and Schmeichel, son of Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel, would have surely jumped at the chance to follow in his father’s footsteps by playing for the club in his later years. However, the seven-time Premier League winners opted to go with Bayindir instead.

At 25 years old, the Turk is a better long-term investment but given United’s financial woes, they could have done with saving the cash this summer. In July, UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body fined Man Utd £256,744 for a “minor breakeven deficit” and they had to remain cautious with their spending in order to avoid further breaches.

Despite FFP restrictions, United have managed to secure some good deals, including big signings for Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount.

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has been loaned out with transfer rights until the end of the season. The Red Devils will pay an initial £8.6million loan fee for the Morocco international and a possible deal extension of a further £17.1million plus £4.another 2 million. “I had to be patient at the moment, but I’m someone who always listens to his heart,” said the 27-year-old. “I’m an avid gamer; I want to bring that energy to the team and will do my best in every action I take for the team.

I know exactly how Erik ten Hag likes to work and what he expects from his players. His coaching and guidance helped me develop as a player early in my career. I know he will do everything in my power to help the group succeed this season.”
