Raphael Varane is another Manchester United player who will be out for “several weeks”. United declined to give details of Varane’s injury after he was sent off at half-time in Saturday’s 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest.
Varane’s sacking will be eased ahead of September’s internationals, but the former France international has suffered nine injuries and ailments since joining United two years ago.
The timing of the 30-year-old’s injury further diminishes Harry Maguire’s chances of leaving Manchester United. Although Victor Lindelof is likely to replace Varane against Arsenal, Maguire is United’s only centre-back in reserve.
The Manchester Evening News reported last week that United expect Maguire to stay after a £30million transfer to West Ham United collapsed earlier this month.
Left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are already missing through injury, while Mason Mount is also absent until after the international break and Rasmus Hojlund is yet to play for United because of a back problem.
