According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United new signing Rasmus Hojlund will receive the number 17 shirt and Fred is expected to leave the club.

The Brazil international has not played for the Diables Rouges since the friendly in Lyon for personal reasons and is now expected to retire.

The midfielder has been linked with the likes of Galatasaray and Fulham and Romano insists he is 100% leaving United this week.

Hojlund was not given a jersey number at his presentation on Saturday. United intend to give him a number.17 t-shirt after Fred is gone.

Hojlund set to wear number 17 shirt

The Denmark international has worn four different numbers during his young career. He started with 45 at Copenhagen before switching to 28.

At Sturm Graz, he wore the number nine shirt before taking the number 17 jersey at Atalanta. The 20-year-old looks set to continue with the same.

The no.9 and no.28 shirts are already occupied by Anthony Martial and Facundo Pellistri, who are not expected to leave the club on a permanent basis.

The no.45 remains vacant, but United and Hojlund himself would prefer a lower squad number. Hence, the Red Devils have to wait for Fred’s departure.

As Romano said, the midfielder’s exit could happen in the coming days, but there is not an urgent need as Hojlund may not be fit for the season opener.

He picked up a minor injury in Atalanta’s pre-season campaign, and it could take a few weeks before he makes his competitive debut for the Red Devils.
