The plans include a fan zone for up to 3,000 people

The £300m extension to the Etihad Stadium, which would increase capacity to almost 62,000 spectators and create a new fan zone, was unanimously approved for construction.

Several members of Manchester City Council’s Planning Committee enthusiastically welcomed the plan at today’s (27 July) meeting.

Plans to expand the north stand include the construction of a 400-bed hotel, a television studio and a roof terrace, as well as a fan zone for up to 3,000 people.

The meeting’s project director, John Cooper, pledged that the project will create a “world-class sports and entertainment district” that is expected to bring far-reaching economic benefits to the city.

He estimated that the project would add £70m to Greater Manchester’s economy each year and create 1,795 new full-time jobs and over 3,000 in total, including part-time and casual jobs. Three councilors voted in favor of the proposal.

Councilor John Hughes said: “I support this project, not just because I’m a City fan, but because it’s an absolutely brilliant project for the Manchester community, including the extra jobs it will bring.

According to the project, the capacity of the North Stand will be increased by 7,900 seats to a total of 61,968 seats.

The existing club shop would be demolished and an eight-story building would be erected with a new shop, cash desk and a new museum as an “interactive visitor space”; on level 3.

The upper floors are used as workspaces for small businesses and start-ups. A nine-storey hotel with 391 rooms and 10 suites is also being built.

City Square will be “refreshed” between the hotel and the club shop; Creation of a new indoor fan zone and event space for 3,000 people.

Danny Wilson, the City’s Chief Urban Operations Manager, said: “We are delighted that Manchester City Council’s Planning Committee has endorsed the club’s proposals for a world-class fan experience and entertainment destination, as well as year-round leisure activities at the Etihad Stadium.”

“This development will not only allow the club to enhance and expand what it offers to fans and visitors on both matchday and matchday days, but will also create sustainable, long-term economic and social benefits for our local community based on build on regeneration.’

Work that City Football Group has overseen in East Manchester since 2008.’ Construction is expected to start in November 2023 once plans are approved with completion expected in August 2025.

The club has also pledged measures to improve ‘traffic’; They move around various locations, including pedestrian zones, and work closely with transportation and the local community.
