Manchester United are set to announce a second summer transfer window, signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana this week.
Erik ten Hag scored the opening goal to replace David de Gea and Onana will join United on their pre-season tour of the United States later this week.
A lump sum of €51m plus bonuses was enough for Inter to part ways with the number one, making Onana one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time.
Cena places Onana fourth in the list of fees paid for a goalkeeper, confirmed Italian football journalist Tancredi Palmeri on his Twitter account.
Manchester United signing Onana at 51m€ means he turns 4th most expensive goalkeeper ever, slightly behind Buffon 2001
1. Kepa 80m€
2. Alisson 62.5
3. Buffon 52.5
4. Onana 51
5. Ederson 40
6. Courtois 35
7. Cillesen 35
8. Neuer 30
9. Pickford 28.5
10. Ramsdale 28— Tancredi Palmeri (@tancredipalmeri) July 18, 2023
Onana is just behind Gianluigi Buffon, who left Parma for €52m for Juventus more than twenty years ago.
Alisson’s €62.5m move to Liverpool puts him second in the list, while Kepa Arrizabalaga’s tearful €80m move from Athletic Club to Chelsea put him comfortably at the top of the list .
Ederson is behind Onana and his €40m Benfica-to-Manchester City transfer sits in the top five. Onana’s arrival at Old Trafford heralds a new era for the club where David de Gea has held the top spot for more than a decade.
The Cameroonian has established himself as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers after a brilliant season at Inter Milan last year and a successful move from Ten Hag to Ajax.
Onana’s attacking ability is in line with Ten Hag’s build-from-back philosophy and will change the way United play.
The manager will no doubt be delighted with the signing and hopes it will be another key element in his plans to put United back at the forefront of European football.
