Alvarez insisted he could play with Haaland, but it was often at De Bruyne’s expense. Even when reflecting on his Champions League semi-final goal vs Real Madrid in 2023, he pointed to the fact he didn’t start the game: “Of course I’d love to score again. Last game I was only able to play five minutes and I scored. This time I’d love to play a bit more and of course score.”
Before the transfer was complete, Bernardo Silva said he hoped Alvarez could stay, and even captain Kyle Walker feels Alvarez should have played more of the big moments – in a controversial move that could be seen as going against his manager.
“Sometimes, he probably should have played when he didn’t, he probably felt that he should have played when he didn’t,” Walker told BBC Five Live. “Obviously Erling going and breaking the records that he did, he kind of played second fiddle to him. He has got a point to prove now. Atletico have paid a lot of money and invested in him now, City have left him go.”
Guardiola will say that Alvarez was benched in those games because he had Haaland and De Bruyne ahead of him. That is probably why Alvarez felt Atletico is a better move for him – he’ll play more but will he play as many of those big semi-finals and finals he wants? Will Atletico be there?
That’s the gamble Alvarez has taken. City will take the £64m for a player who wasn’t in their strongest XI and move on. Maybe he will force them to regret it down the line, but Guardiola always says he doesn’t want unhappy players in his squad.
