Pep Guardiola could be the next England manager, according to Alan Shearer.

The FA are on the hunt for Gareth Southgate’s replacement following the 53-year-old’s resignation in the wake of last month’s Euro 2024 final defeat. In the meantime, Lee Carsley has been appointed interim head coach and is expected to take charge of the Three Lions’ Nations League matches in September.

Lineker, 63, then asked if England’s next manager ought to be English, to which Richards, 36, replied: “If Pep was to go to England and win the World Cup, no one would care [that he isn’t English].”

Lineker then quipped: “The difference with someone like Pep or [Jurgen] Klopp or [Carlo] Ancelotti is that they’ve had experience in English football… so we can pretend they’re English.”

It’s understood the FA are planning to interview an array of candidates before choosing Southgate’s successor, and don’t want to rush into any decision. As such, Shearer said Carsley’s appointment makes complete sense.

“I think it’s a wise decision to give it to Lee Carsley and just take their time and see what happens,” he said. “It would have been really difficult to appoint someone in that short amount of time, so this gives them time to sit back and look at the bigger picture.”
