Man City brace for Rodri blow UEFA open disciplinary investigation into Spain Euro 2024 incident

Manchester City midfielder Rodri could face disciplinary action from UEFA following chants in the aftermath of Spain’s Euro 2024 final win vs England

Manchester City’s Rodri and AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata could face disciplinary action from UEFA following a chant about Gibraltar during Spain’s Euro 2024 victory celebrations.

The pair were heard singing “Gibraltar is Spanish” at a public event in Madrid, leading the Gibraltar Football Association to lodge a formal complaint with UEFA. And the governing body confirmed on Friday that an investigation into the incident is underway.

A statement from UEFA said: “A UEFA ethics and disciplinary Inspector is being appointed to evaluate a potential violation of the UEFA disciplinary regulations by the players Rodrigo Hernandez Cascante (Rodri) and Alvaro Morata in the context of conduct that occurred during the public presentation of the Euro 2024 trophy in Madrid on July 15, 2024.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”

UEFA’s disciplinary regulations, specifically Article 11 (c), state that anyone “who uses sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature” will be in breach of its rules concerning conduct. Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, is the subject of a territorial claim by Spain.

“The conduct is also deeply offensive to the Gibraltar FA since it implies we should not exist as an independent national member association of UEFA.”

Gibraltar is an enclave in the south of Spain but has been under British rule since 1713, but Spain continues to claim sovereignty of the territory. The country has been a full member of UEFA since 2013 and has competed in previous World Cup and European Championships qualification campaigns.

Spain triumphed over England with a 2-1 victory in the final of Euro 2024 in Berlin last Sunday evening.
