Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title despite a 2-1 win over Everton at the Emirates
Any sense of disappointment among them was quickly replaced by an impression of pride

Like last season, Mikel Arteta’s side led the way for so long only to be pipped at the last by Pep Guardiola’s history makers.

But as the optimism, however, unrealistic, dissipated into the sizzling north London air on a roasting day in the capital, any sense of disappointment was quickly replaced by an impression of pride.

The Emirates Stadium was at its loudest as Michael Oliver blew for full time. They know their team is on the cusp of something special.

Indeed, in a few weeks time, as the battle scars of another failure have healed, those dreams will burn brightly once again.

Arsenal will be there or thereabouts again this time next year. This is some team Arteta has built, and he isn’t finished.

Unfortunately for Arsenal they’re up against one of the greatest teams in the history of football.

That will come as no consolation to Arteta or his players in the short term.

But in the fullness of time, they will come to realise their excellence.

They’ve improved this season: accumulated more points and goals than last term.

They’ve conceded less and finished with a far stronger goal difference. They are so close and the reaction of the supporters to a heartbreaking disappointment suggests they believe they’ll eventually reach the promised land.

Yet, with all that said, when Arteta reflects he’ll do so knowing where his team faltered.

A home loss to West Ham in December was followed up by an away defeat to Fulham.

The margins in this title race were threadbare. But City know how to win. Arsenal don’t…yet

Chance after chance after chance, only to fall behind to an Idrissa Gueye free kick that wickedly deflected off Rice to leave David Raya helpless.

It really shouldn’t have come to this for Arsenal. Takehiro Tomiyasu missed two early chances, although by that point Phil Foden had already fired Manchester City in front.

Rice, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli all squandered their own opportunities before Gueye struck in 40th minute.

It wasn’t as if Arsenal hadn’t been warned either, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who appears to be back to his dominant self following a period in his career that’s been plagued by injury, struck the post before rippling the side netting with the rebound moments before Everton’s shock opener.

Arsenal responded emphatically in the 43rd minute, Tomiyasu drilling home from just inside the penalty area after Odegaard’s cut back.

News of Mohammed Kudus’ wondergoal that reduced City’s lead over West Ham to 2-1, enhanced the sense of renewed optimism.

Then arrived news of a phantom Hammers equaliser. The Emirates erupted, only for it to be become clear they were either celebrating the same goal or a cruel hoax.

Arsenal supporters were put through the wringer inside the Emirates as they chased the title
The mood before and after the game though remained one of immense pride in their team

News of Rodri’s goal at the Etihad in the 59th minute ended Arsenal’s hopes once and for all, although Tomas Soucek’s disallowed effort had Gunners fans believing again for an agonising few seconds.

Kai Havertz eventually scored Arsenal’s winner in the 89th minute but the game was up by then.

‘This isn’t a time to be sad,’ said Arteta as he addressed the fans. That’s wishful thinking right now, but his words ring true.

Now for the final step.
