Erik ten Hag is under pressure as Man Utd manager but he believes people who understand football realise patience is required.

Ineos have yet to make their stance clear on Ten Hag’s future but after the nature of Monday’s dismal defeat, the calls for him to go at the end of the season have got louder, although the away end remained supportive of their side until the very end at Selhurst Park.

Ten Hag can also point to the patience afforded to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who finished eighth in his first two seasons at the club and saw his side bottom of the Premier League after three games of the following campaign, before eventually seeing his project come good.

The United manager will hope he is afforded similar patience by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and said the critics who didn’t understand the need for patience and constraints he has worked under this season didn’t have knowledge of the game or of the job.

“I think the fans have the patience, you’ve seen it on Monday,” he said. “I see some comments they don’t, either they don’t have any knowledge of football or they don’t have any knowledge about managing a football team or they just aren’t up to it. I think there are many people who see the problems and they are patient.”

“I did my job and in the first year I would say it was a good formation. We played to our levels, maybe we over-performed. In this one we haven’t and I know why, but we are still in an FA Cup final and that is a great achievement.

“I didn’t change but of course the experiences and challenges did. This is a massive club and you only realise that when you first come in, the things you have to face.

“But I wanted to take on this challenge and have not had one second when I regret that decision. I am really happy to be here, and have never for a single second regretted coming.”
