As has been well documented, United want to bring in a defensive midfielder before the end of this summer’s transfer window and they are exploring various avenues. They are interested in Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte and Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad and have refused to close the door on possibly re-signing former loanee Sofyan Amrabat.

United have the option to extend McTominay’s stay by a further year, but he would command the highest fee of the aforementioned trio, following his impressive run in front of goal last season. Ten Hag is insistent on having two players for each position and United discovered in 2022/23 that it can be costly to have just one defensive-midfield specialist. If they can reach an agreement with Fiorentina to re-sign Amrabat, it would make sense to bring him back as a squad player to provide cover for Ugarte.

As far as the No.8/box-to-box midfield options are concerned, United, if they were to sell Eriksen and Hannibal, would be left with Mason Mount, Mainoo and McTominay. Toby Collyer could also become a more regular fixture in the first team if he continues to impress in pre-season.

Overall, United need to sign one defensive midfielder at the very minimum, but that tally must double if Casemiro departs. They may get away with not needing to sign another No.8 if McTominay is retained, but it cannot be ruled out.

Sufficient depth is something United have lacked in the Ten Hag era and they cannot afford to fall short again this term. Player sales, however, will ultimately dictate what is and what isn’t achievable.
