For once there is no Manchester City summer signing transfer saga. There is no Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, or huge arrival of Erling Haaland. Six weeks into the window and it is the potential exit of Julian Alvarez attracting most attention.

Initially a deal touted for Chelsea to explore in the early weeks of June, as Alvarez continues his work with Argentina at the Olympics having been successful at the Copa America, tensions have risen. Alvarez railed against that. “I heard what Guardiola said,” he told TyC Sports. “I don’t have much to say about it. I never said anything bad. I just said that I was going to think about it like I do every season to make an analysis of what happened last season, a projection of what may come.

“I always say that I am comfortable and happy at City, which is a great club. I didn’t say anything bad.” It comes after suggestions that Alvarez was frustrated leading into this summer at his lack of game time in the perceived big games. Despite being a top performer domestically he found Champions League minutes harder to come by.

Always in the shadow of Haaland, and then Kevin De Bruyne when he returned, Alvarez remains an outsider to a stupendously stacked team. This is a player with major trophies coming out of his ears aged 24, and over 100 City appearances within two seasons.

Now the issue remains with wider links to Paris Saint-Germain. It has been claimed that Luis Enrique’s side will turn to the City man if a deal for Victor Osimhen is not achievable. Enrique is described as being a big fan of Alvarez as well, with talks holding up for their primary target.

City will of course want him to stay and he showed his value in covering at both number nine and number ten last term. Of course he will want to play the bigger games, but no player featured more than him last season and he’s got to prove to Guardiola he should start ahead of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland. Or to find a way to play in a system with both.

And if he wants to leave, the ball is firmly in City’s court. A contract until 2028 gives Alvarez no leverage, so he must persuade someone to pay enough to get City to sell. A young, versatile World Cup-winner, who is a proven goalscorer and creative player is not going to come cheap. Alvarez may have no choice but to deal with the situation and not make it any worse.

Given what he has achieved in such a short space of time, it is perhaps no surprise that Alvarez is evaluating his options. With another Copa America title to his name and an Olympic gold medal being eyed, Alvarez has undoubtedly gone from squad player to marquee star.

As was evidenced by his contributions in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne and Haaland, Alvarez clearly does not want to play second fiddle anymore. Having also seen how Cole Palmer has become the man for Chelsea, it is clear the Argentina international wants that.

However, he is contracted until 2028 which puts City in a strong position to either keep onto him or demand a significant fee for his departure. Alongside that, the reigning Premier League champions regularly make it to the final stages of every competition which makes quality squad depth important.
